Tottenham Sack Ange Postecoglou Despite Europa League Triumph

Tottenham Hotspur have sacked manager Ange Postecoglou, citing poor Premier League performance despite a historic European victory.

Tottenham Hotspur have announced the dismissal of manager Ange Postecoglou, just weeks after the club lifted the Europa League trophy in what was widely celebrated as one of the greatest moments in the club’s history. The decision, however, was based on long-term domestic performance, with the club finishing a disappointing 17th in the Premier League this season.

In a statement issued by the club, Tottenham highlighted that they had accumulated only 78 points from their last 66 Premier League matches — a record bettered only by Wolves in the same period. The club stressed that despite the emotional high of European success, the decision to part ways with Postecoglou was based on their broader trajectory.

“Whilst winning the Europa League this season ranks as one of the Club’s greatest moments, we cannot base our decision on emotions aligned to this triumph,” the statement read.

Postecoglou, who joined the club to much fanfare, leaves after two seasons in charge. Reacting to the decision, the Australian expressed pride in what was achieved during his tenure.

“When I reflect on my time as manager of Tottenham Hotspur, my overriding emotion is one of pride,” he said. “The opportunity to lead one of England’s historic football clubs and bring back the glory it deserves will live with me for a lifetime. Sharing that experience with all those who truly love this club and seeing the impact it had on them is something I will never forget.”

He added: “We have laid the foundations. I sincerely want to thank the supporters. We are forever connected.”

The news has sparked widespread reaction across the football world. Tottenham defender Pedro Porro said: “I’ll always be grateful,” while former England striker Alan Shearer described the decision as further proof that “football is a stupid game.”

Despite inconsistency in the league, Postecoglou’s side had gained a reputation for their attacking style of play and entertaining matches, but ultimately, their league form failed to match their European campaign.

As the club prepares to move forward without Postecoglou, questions remain over Tottenham’s direction and leadership ahead of the next season.
